Cavity Wall Extraction
When installed correctly, cavity wall insulation will last the lifetime of the property.
However – situations can occur where the existing insulation will need to be removed from the walls.
It could be that old Urea Formaldehyde foam was installed many years ago and has since degraded, leaving voids and cold spots in the walls or the property may have suffered a leak which soaked the insulation.
Whatever the reason, A to Z can determine whether the existing insulation is adequate or if it needs to come out. If so, we are experienced in removing failed insulation using specialist equipment and ensuring the material is disposed of correctly.
What exactly is Cavity Wall Extraction?
Cavity wall extraction is the process of removing old, defective or incorrectly installed cavity wall insulation from between the inner and outer layers of a property’s walls.
Many UK homes built after the 1920s feature cavity walls designed to improve thermal performance, but when insulation becomes damp, damaged or unsuitable for the property, it can lead to serious issues such as mould, cold spots and reduced energy efficiency.
Extraction safely clears the material so the cavity can either remain empty or be refilled with modern, approved insulation.

Why Might Cavity Wall Insulation Need Removing?
Cavity wall insulation may need to be extracted for several reasons commonly seen in UK homes:
Water ingress or flooding: Poor weatherproofing or coastal conditions can allow moisture to soak into the insulation.
Incorrect installation: Past government schemes or unqualified installers sometimes used unsuitable materials.
Property exposure: Homes in high-rainfall, coastal or wind-driven rain zones may not be suitable for insulation.
Structural issues: Damaged brickwork, cracks or bridging can lead to damp and mould. Removing the insulation helps restore a dry, healthy home and prevents long-term structural problems.
How Does Cavity Wall Extraction Work?
Professional extraction involves specialist equipment that gently agitates and vacuums the insulation material out of the cavity.
Small holes are drilled into the external walls and a few bricks taken out along the bottom of the wall to access the insulation. Once the material is removed, the holes are filled and colour-matched. The process is clean, controlled and designed to minimise disruption for homeowners.
Cavity Wall Extraction
- Eliminates damp and mould problems
- Stops cold spots and improves indoor comfort
- Prevents brickwork deterioration
- Allows for updated, approved insulation systems
- Helps restore property value and energy efficiency
Is Your Home Suitable for Extraction?
If you’ve noticed persistent damp, mould growth, musty smells or unusually high heating bills, your property may benefit from a cavity wall survey.
A qualified technician can inspect your walls with borescope equipment and advise whether extraction is required.
